Reporting to the Financial Aid Associate Director, this position provides students, families, and the internal and external University communities with information about financing education, debt management, budgeting, basic financial planning, and guidelines for mastering on-line, interactive applications and self-counseling services. The financial aid counselor works directly with students to enhance their understanding of responsibilities as a financial aid recipient. Program eligibility rules are communicated to students and families regarding scholarships, grants, work study employment, student loans, and state aid programs. Approximately 70% of all students at UNLV receive some form of financial aid totaling $240 million in disbursements.

This position requires solid knowledge of IRS tax laws in relation to completing forms 1040, 1040A and 1040EZ. This position also requires a strong background of U.S. Department of Education Title IV regulations. The incumbent must be able to understand the relationship of IRS and FAFSA data elements when reviewing assessing the financial aid record of a student.

Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Education, Business, Interdisciplinary Studies, Communications, or other related field from a regionally accredited college or university plus three years of professional experience. Experience in student financial aid/services, customer service, public speaking, and knowledge of standard and electronic presentations in a high-paced environment is desirable.
Strong written and oral communication skills; extensive computer skills, including familiarity with financial aid/student information systems, as well as spreadsheet and word-processing applications.

Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions. Position is contingent upon funding.
