Christopher Newport University invites applications for the position of Associate Director of Student Activities. Reporting to the Director of Student Activities, the successful candidate will be responsible for directing student involvement and engagement on campus; developing and implementing a comprehensive student organization leadership program; facilitating large scale, campus wide programs and major activities/special events for the University; developing and
managing the promotional efforts of the Office including marketing, branding, advertising, website management, and maintaining an active presence in social media outlets. The Associate Director will assume the responsibilities of the Director when absent by providing support and direction to faculty, staff, and students regarding the student learning experience that are either sponsored or facilitated by the Department.

A Master’s degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs Administration, Student Personnel Development, or a related field; or a Bachelor’s degree and significant campus programming experience that equates to an advanced degree is required. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience in developing vision; implementing educational and social programs; managing personnel; creating budgets within a student activities operation; direct experience working with clubs and organizations on a college/university campus; demonstrated experience in advising students; strong organizational and administrative skills; strong interpersonal communication skills; strong advising skills; proficient in computer applications; excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with competing deadlines; work independently with minimal supervision; organize work to ensure the timely delivery of services and support; and ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and flexible work hours.

Preference will be given to candidates with significant post-master’s experience; knowledge of student development theories; direct experience developing and implementing student programs; experience negotiating contracts; experience managing budgets; experience collaborating with various constituencies; web design knowledge; familiarity with program promotion including the utilization of social media; and involvement with assessment planning and implementation.
