Description :

The Assistant Director for the First Year Areasis a live-in member of the residential life leadership team
and reports to the Director of Residential Life. The Assistant Director provides crisis management
coverage and response for the residential population. Primary areas of responsibility include: staff
supervision, oversight of the first year residential experience and living learning communities, diversity,
student engagement and administration.
Staff Supervision and Development
1. Supervise and evaluate 4 professional Residence Hall Directors
2. Assist with the development and execution of a comprehensive training program for all
Residence Hall Directors
3. Establish and maintain expectations of staff members
4. Indirectly supervise 54 Resident Assistants
5. Ensure area staff have operational knowledge of procedures, policies and practices essential to the
effective functioning of the residence halls
6. Participate in the recruitment and selection of professional and paraprofessional staff
7. Serve as point person to Residence Hall Council

First Year Residential Experience
1. Provide leadership for the First Year Residential Experience (FYRE)
2. Provide training to professional and paraprofessional staff specific to first year student
development
3. Utilize assessment to identify trends and make recommendations for the first year area
4. Develop and execute retention strategies in the first year area
5. Serve as the department representative on the divisional orientation committee
6. Coordinate department efforts for admissions recruitment events
7. Support the University Learning Paradigm through educational and programmatic efforts
8. Be knowledgeable concerning the trends and research for first year students

Living Learning Communities
1. Provide leadership for all living learning communities
2. Communicate and meet regularly with faculty or staff associated with learning communities
3. Plan and execute programming
4. Assist with the assessment efforts for living learning communities
5. Assist students in the selection of housing for their second year
6. Assist with development of future living learning communities
7. Coordinate wellness mentor program

Inclusion/Diversity
1. Oversee efforts for sustaining an inclusive residential environment
2. Oversee the execution of department programming effortsrelated to diversity and inclusion
3. Oversee the department diversity committee
4. Assist in the implementation of the University’s Diversity plan
5. Assist in the development of training for professional and paraprofessional staff related to
diversity and inclusion.
6. Serve as department representative on the University diversity committee

Student Engagement
1. Ensure each areas programming supports a co-curricular experience; including engagement, selfreflection, and personal growth
2. Assist in the implementation and sustaining of high impact practices in the department
3. Assist in the review and implementation of policies and practices that result in higher levels of
student engagement and student success
4. Identify areas for faculty/staff collaboration and education
5. Develop and oversee faculty outreach and recognition initiatives

Administration
1. Assist in the development and implementation of institutional and departmental goals, policies
and procedures
2. Adjudicate student conduct cases
3. Participate in departmental, divisional and institutional committees as assigned
4. Participate in administrative back up rotation and respond to campus when needed
5. Consult with students, parents and members of the university as appropriate
6. Fulfill other duties as assigned

Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a master’s degree in student personnel or related field, previous
supervisory experience, strong communication and administrative skills, ability to manage multiple
priorities, and a commitment to the profession. A minimum of 3 years postgraduate/professional
residential life experience and a demonstrated commitment to working with first year students is required
