Assessment in Higher Ed and Your Career

For many years the Higher Ed field was without any qualifying metrics, and assessment was not a popular term. This was due in large part to the fact that Higher Ed, Student Affairs in particular, did see the relevance in assessment. Assessment was viewed more as punitive in nature rather than serving a purpose for the greater good of the student. For these reasons, assessment never gained a foothold in Higher Ed until now. Over the past decade assessment and planning have become buzz words of sorts on college campuses. Colleges and universities are creating assessment departments and hiring staff to fill these roles. Graduate students are becomingly increasingly interested in careers in assessment and planning. “Data Driven Change” is the motto that may campus leaders are using to explain why they feel assessment is important.
